The Red Racer Snail (Vittina waigiensis) is a nerite snail from Southeast Asia, named for the red and orange zigzag stripes on its shell.
They're one of the best algae grazers you can add to a tank, working over glass, rock and decor without touching your plants. Like other nerites they can't breed in freshwater, so numbers stay exactly as you bought them. You may see small white eggs on wood or rock now and then, but these won't hatch and can be scraped off.
Red Racers do best in a stable, well-oxygenated aquarium with gentle to moderate flow, neutral to slightly alkaline water, and peaceful tankmates. Keep the lid closed, as nerites will sometimes climb out. For more on tank mates and feeding, have a read of our Red Racer Snail care guide.
