A decent pair of tweezers and a set of curved scissors will cover most planting and trimming jobs. Everything else, spatulas, wave scissors, cleaning tools, is useful but not essential for a first tank.

Curved scissors make it easier to trim plants at the back or sides of the tank without disturbing everything around them. Straight scissors work fine for open areas, so many people end up with both.

Rinse them in fresh water after use and dry them properly before putting them away. Look for stainless steel tools when buying, as they hold up far better long term than cheaper alternatives.

You can, but aquascaping tools are longer, which makes reaching the bottom of a tank much easier, and they're built to resist rust from repeated contact with water. Worth the investment if you're planting regularly.
