Air Pumps and Accessories

An air pump is one of the simplest ways to improve a tank, adding surface movement and oxygen that helps keep your fish comfortable and your water fresh. It also powers sponge filters, bubble walls and decorations, and gives you a backup source of oxygen if a filter ever stops working.

We stock aquarium air pumps in a range of sizes, from compact models for nano tanks up to larger pumps for bigger setups, along with the accessories to go with them, including airline, check valves, splitters and a choice of airstones and bubblers.

Choosing the right pump comes down to your tank size and what you plan to run from it, so it’s worth thinking about whether you’ll be powering an airstone, a decoration or a filter before you buy. A check valve is a small addition that is well worth having, as it stops water siphoning back down the airline into the pump if the power ever goes off. If you’re not sure which pump suits your tank, pop in or give us a call and we’ll help you choose.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not always, but many keepers find one helpful. It adds extra surface movement and oxygen, which is especially useful in warm weather, in heavily stocked tanks, or as a backup if your filter stops.

It depends on your tank size and what you’re running. A small pump is fine for a nano tank with a single airstone, while larger tanks or several outlets need a pump with more output. Our range runs from compact models up to larger pumps.

It lets air flow into the tank but stops water travelling back down the airline to the pump. This matters if the pump is below the water level and the power cuts out.

Vibration is the usual cause, so try placing the pump on a soft surface such as foam or a folded towel. An old or blocked airstone can also make the pump work harder and sound louder.

Airstones clog up over time with algae and mineral build-up, so most keepers replace them every few months, or sooner if the bubbles slow down or become uneven.
