Hydrocotyle verticillata, commonly known as Whorled Pennywort, is a versatile creeping plant grown for its neat, round, umbrella-shaped leaves arranged in distinctive whorls along the stem. Under bright light it forms a low, dense carpet across the substrate, while in more modest lighting it grows taller and looser, making it equally at home as a foreground carpet or a loosely trailing midground plant, depending on how it's grown and trimmed. Supplied as a well-rooted Tropica pot, it's ready to plant straight away.
It's a genuinely easy, fast-growing plant that adapts to a wide range of water conditions, and while it will grow in low-tech tanks, it rewards nutrient-rich substrate, stronger light and CO2 with denser, more compact growth. Left untrimmed its creeping stems will happily climb over hardscape or spread sideways, so regular trimming along the stem is the simplest way to keep it thick and low rather than tall and sparse.
Its adaptability and undemanding nature make it a popular choice for both beginners building their first planted tank and more experienced aquascapers after a reliable, textured carpet.
