Feeding Your Pond Fish Through the Seasons

Pond fish have different feeding needs across the year, lighter, easily digestible foods like wheatgerm sticks are ideal as temperatures drop in autumn, while winter formulas support fish when they're barely feeding at all in colder water. Getting this right helps keep your fish in good condition through the season rather than just over the warmer months. If you're not sure which food suits your pond and fish right now, just ask, we're happy to help you pick the right one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Once water temperature drops below around 10°C, fish's metabolism slows right down and they struggle to digest standard foods. Switching to a wheatgerm-based or dedicated winter formula at this point is easier on their digestion.

Not necessarily, but you'll feed much less often. Below around 4-5°C, fish become largely dormant and feeding should generally stop altogether until temperatures rise again in spring.

Floating sticks are easy to monitor and won't sit in the pond uneaten, making them a good everyday choice. Sinking pellets suit bottom feeders or fish that are reluctant to come to the surface.

Many all-season and wheatgerm-based foods suit both, though dedicated koi foods tend to have a higher protein content to support their larger size and growth.
