Anubias barteri var. caladiifolia is one of the larger, bolder members of the Anubias family, grown for its striking arrow to heart-shaped leaves and thick, glossy foliage. Where 'Mini Coin' and similar dwarf varieties suit the foreground, caladiifolia is built for background and midground planting, adding real structure and a jungle-like presence to bigger tanks. Supplied as a well-rooted Tropica pot, it's ready to attach to hardscape and start settling in straight away. Like all Anubias, this is an epiphyte rather than a substrate plant: the rhizome should never be buried, as this can cause it to rot. Instead, tie or glue it to a piece of driftwood or rock, where roots will slowly take hold over the following weeks. Growth is genuinely slow, often just a new leaf every couple of months, so it's a plant that rewards patience rather than fast results. Low to moderate light suits it best; too much intense lighting can encourage algae to build up on the older, slower-growing leaves. Hardy, tolerant of a wide range of water conditions, and generally left alone by herbivorous fish, it's a dependable choice for adding height and texture to community tanks and larger aquascapes alike.

At a glance:

  • Placement: midground to background, attached to hardscape (driftwood/rock)
  • Light: low to moderate
  • Growth rate: slow
  • Difficulty: easy, suitable for beginners
  • CO2: not essential
  • Format: Tropica potted plant, well-rooted and ready to attach
