Feeding Pond Fish Through Winter 2026

Feeding pond fish correctly through winter is essential for koi and goldfish health in UK garden ponds. Knowing when to stop feeding, which food to use, and how water temperature affects digestion can prevent common winter fish health problems.

Should You Feed Pond Fish in Winter?

Generally, no. It depends on the weather, which is changeable in the UK, but your fish will most likely stop feeding from the end of October until around the end of February. As temperatures begin to fall, many pond keepers switch to specially formulated winter pond fish food designed for colder water digestion.

Temperature Guidelines for Feeding

As pond water temperatures begin to fall in autumn, your fish metabolism slows significantly. Pond fish such as koi and goldfish rely on water temperature to digest food properly, so feeding at the wrong time can lead to serious health problems. Using a highly digestible wheatgerm-based food helps prevent undigested food sitting in the fish gut during colder weather. Monitoring water temperature with a pond thermometer removes guesswork and helps prevent overfeeding during sudden cold snaps.

Water Temperature Feeding Advice
Above 17°C Summer food
12–17°C Spring/Autumn food
8–12°C Winter wheatgerm food
Below 8°C Stop feeding

Choosing the Best Winter Food

As the water temperature drops, you need to change your food to one that is better suited to the cooler water. Fish struggle to digest foods at lower water temperatures, so it is important to find one that has the right composition to be easily digested. Generally, regular summer foods can be fed down to water temperatures of around 17°C. Spring and autumn type foods can be used down to around 12°C, but winter specific foods can be fed down to temperatures of 8°C. This helps the fish obtain the right nutrients and body weight to stay fit and healthy through the cold winter months when they stop feeding completely.

Starting in Spring

The key here is to keep an eye on the water temperature and the behaviour of your fish. You should start to feed using temperature-suitable food, beginning with a winter food at the coldest temperatures and gradually changing to a spring food as the water temperature improves. If you are choosing high-quality foods such as JBL or Hikari, you will find feeding temperatures on the packets. For further help and advice, just pop us an email.
