Negombo tree pods are large, brown, heart-shaped natural pods, around 12 cm long, supplied as a pack of two. They have a deep, open structure that makes a striking centrepiece on the substrate of a blackwater or biotope tank, and they blend well with leaf litter, cones and wood.
The open shape gives shrimp, fry and small peaceful fish somewhere to shelter, and the textured surface grows biofilm over time for shrimp and snails to graze on. As the pods slowly break down, they may release tannins and humic substances that give a more natural blackwater look. The effect depends on the size of the tank, your water and how much you add.
Add them gradually, especially in small tanks or soft water. Before adding to your aquarium, rinse well. A hot-water soak of 20 to 30 minutes helps them sink, and harder pieces can be soaked for longer. Some pods may float at first and sink later.
As a natural product, size and appearance may vary. Adding botanicals to your aquarium can affect water parameters and release tannins into the water, so we recommend regular water testing when using botanicals.
