Mopani Wood Small – Aquarium Hardscape Wood
A small piece of Mopani wood, a dense, gnarled wood with a rich, textured surface and two-tone colouring. It suits nano and small to medium aquariums, giving shelter for fish and shrimp and surfaces for attaching mosses, ferns, Anubias and Bucephalandra. Each piece is a random piece, so shape, size and colour will vary from the one shown.
Natural wood needs a little preparation before it goes in the tank. Rinse and scrub it with clean water to remove dust and debris, then soak it. Mopani is heavy and usually sinks quickly, but it can release a lot of tannins, so soaking in a container and changing the water regularly is recommended until the water runs clearer. Smaller pieces can be boiled to speed this up.
If you want to make sure it stays exactly where you want it, gluing the wood to a rock or a piece of slate with aquarium-safe superglue is often the best way. The rock or slate can then be hidden under the substrate or covered with moss.
Wood can release tannins that turn the water a tea-like brown and lower pH slightly. This is harmless to most fish and shrimp and is similar to natural blackwater conditions. If you prefer clear water, keep soaking and changing the water before adding it, or use filter carbon. A thin white film (biofilm) can appear on new wood and usually disappears by itself or is eaten by shrimp and snails.
As a natural product, size, shape, colour and appearance may vary. Adding wood to your aquarium can affect water parameters and release tannins into the water, so we recommend regular water testing when using natural products.
