Together, these natural elements create a soft, biotope-style environment that bettas and other freshwater fish thrive in. The coconut hide gives fish a secure place to rest and feel safe, while catappa (Indian almond) leaves and casuarina cones release beneficial tannins as they break down, helping to soften and naturally condition the water. Cholla wood offers a place for fish and shrimp to graze and hide, and the green stones round off the natural look of the set-up.

Please note: as the botanicals release tannins, they will naturally tint the water a tea-like, "blackwater" colour over time. This is completely normal and harmless, and many keepers like the softer, more natural look it gives the aquarium. As the botanicals begin to break down, they can also cause a temporary rise in ammonia, so it's worth keeping a close eye on water quality with regular testing. This is rarely an issue in an established, fully cycled tank, but in a new aquarium it's especially important to monitor closely and remove any botanicals that are breaking down too quickly if ammonia starts to climb.
