Cholla Wood Pieces

Cholla wood is a lightweight, hollow wood formed from the dried skeleton of the cholla cactus, and it's become a popular natural addition to shrimp tanks, fish tanks, and aquascapes alike. Its hollow tunnels make an ideal hiding spot for shrimp, giving them somewhere safe to moult and explore, while the textured surface naturally develops biofilm, a valuable food source for shrimp, snails, and bottom-dwelling fish.

It's also useful for aquascaping, as moss, Anubias, and Bucephalandra can all be tied on to create a natural, textured feature. Small fish, plecos, corydoras, and otocinclus will graze on the biofilm too, and as the wood breaks down over time it releases tannins that gently soften and tint the water, similar to a natural blackwater environment.

Cholla wood tends to float at first, so it's best to boil or soak it before adding it to the tank; this helps remove excess tannins and waterlogs the wood so it sinks more easily. Pieces can also be cut down to size for nano tanks or smaller shrimp setups.

How to Use Cholla Wood in Your Aquarium

Before adding cholla wood to your tank, it's best to Boil or soak it to help it sink and remove excess tannins. Over time, the wood will naturally Break down, enriching your aquarium ecosystem.
