Butterfly half moon male Betta No.9

Our Halfmoon Male Bettas are prized for their spectacular tails, which open out into a wide, half moon shaped fan when flared. We source them from a few carefully chosen suppliers, mainly in Thailand and occasionally Indonesia, and they typically arrive with us as young fish around six months old.

Blue Butterfly Halfmoon. This gorgeous butterfly boasts a very dark body colour, which fades into bold electric blue. His tail pattern and colour is very even and full.

Thanks to their flowing tails, Halfmoons do best in a tank of at least 25 litres, up to around 80 litres. If you're planning to keep them with other fish, we'd recommend at least 40 litres. They need a heated, planted tank with plenty of decoration to feel settled, and botanicals such as almond leaves or alder cones are a great addition too, helping to create the softer, more natural water conditions Bettas thrive in. Bettas need a high protein diet rather than a vegetable based one. JBL insect sticks are a firm favourite here, alongside live and frozen foods (just go easy on the bloodworm). Our feeding guide covers this in more depth.

In smaller tanks, we wouldn't add any other fish, though cleaner fish or shrimp are usually fine. In a larger setup, a Halfmoon can often live happily alongside a few community housemates.

Please note the fish shown is the exact one you'll collect, not a representative photo. Colouration can look a little different depending on the lighting it's photographed and kept under, and it's worth knowing that Bettas can and do change colour as they mature, particularly those carrying the marble gene.
