One of the most common questions we receive at Byrkley Aquatics & Aquascaping Ltd is: "How long will my plants take to arrive, and will they still be alive when they get here?" If you've ever hesitated before ordering live aquarium plants online, you're not alone.
It's a fair question and as a family business with nearly 40 years in the aquatics trade, we think we're well placed to give you an honest, experience-led answer.
Our Delivery Timeframe
When you place an order with us, we aim to pack and dispatch it within 1–2 working days. All aquarium plant orders are sent via Royal Mail 24-hour tracked service, dispatched early in the morning so they're in the system and moving as quickly as possible. In most cases, your plants will be with you the next day.
Simple as that but there are a few important nuances worth knowing.
The Weekend Question (This One Matters More Than You'd Think)
If your order comes through on a Thursday or Friday, we'll typically drop you an email to ask whether you'd like us to hold it until the following Monday.
Why? Because even on a fast 24-hour service, there's a real risk of plants sitting in a depot over the weekend. Royal Mail does deliver to many areas on Saturdays, but it's not guaranteed, and we'd rather give you the choice than make that decision for you. It's something we've learned from over 30 years of receiving plant deliveries ourselves.
We know how frustrating it is to receive plants that have been stressed in transit. Giving you the option to wait a couple of days is a small thing, but it makes a real difference.
What About Extreme Temperatures?
Temperature is something we take seriously. During heatwaves or particularly cold snaps, we may contact you before dispatching to discuss options. Whether that's delaying your order, swapping certain varieties, or making adjustments to packaging.
This isn't us being overly cautious. It's hard-won knowledge. For over 30 years we've been receiving plant shipments directly from suppliers in Holland, Singapore and Malaysia. Holland shipments typically take 2–3 days in transit, and we've seen first-hand what extreme summer heat can do, even when our suppliers add ice packs to the boxes, some of the more delicate varieties simply struggle.
That experience means we know which plants are at risk in high temperatures, and we won't just ship them and hope for the best. We'd rather recommend a postponement, offer you an alternative, or issue a refund than send you something that arrives in poor condition.
How We Pack Your Plants
Every plant order is packed on the day it's dispatched not before. This keeps transit time as short as possible and means plants aren't sitting boxed up any longer than necessary.
We use a combination of new and recycled packaging materials, which helps keep costs down for you and reduces waste too. More importantly, every plant is packed to minimise movement and prevent drying out during transit.
Before anything goes in a box, every plant is checked by an experienced member of our in-store team. If we're not happy with the condition of a plant, we won't send it. We'll contact you to offer a substitute, suggest waiting for our next delivery, or arrange a refund. We've been assessing plant quality for decades, that's not something you get from a fulfilment warehouse.
What If My Plants Arrive Looking Stressed?
Even with the best packaging and the fastest couriers, live plants can sometimes arrive looking a little worse for wear. Here's what to look for and what to do:
Dry or wilted plants — Don't panic. Rehydrate them in water and you should start to see recovery fairly quickly. This is one of the most common transit issues and one of the most recoverable.
Bruised or damaged leaves — Gently remove the most damaged areas. This gives the rest of the plant the best chance to recover without the rot spreading.
Pale or washed-out colour — This usually just means the plant needs light and water. Give it a couple of days in a well-lit spot and the colour should start to return.
Unpleasant smell — This is the one to watch out for. If your plants smell off, they may have started to rot in transit. Unfortunately these are unlikely to recover fully.
A Note on "Melting" — And Why It's Not Always Bad News
There's one more thing worth mentioning, and it catches a lot of new plant keepers off guard. Most aquarium plants are actually grown out of water at the nursery. They're cultivated in emersed (above-water) conditions because it's faster and easier at scale, which means when they arrive in your tank, they're transitioning to a fully submerged environment for the first time.
This adjustment period can sometimes cause leaves to turn yellow, brown, or appear to melt away. It looks alarming, but it's often completely normal. Cryptocoryne are particularly well-known for this — so much so that it's commonly called "Crypt melt."
Our advice: trim off the dead and dying leaves, but leave the plant in the tank. Don't dig it up and assume it's lost. Given a little time and stable water conditions, these plants will very often come back stronger than ever, sending up fresh new growth from the roots.
It's one of those things that separates experienced aquascapers from beginners — knowing when to be patient rather than reaching for the bin.
Our Top Tip: Quarantine First
Whatever condition your plants arrive in, we always recommend placing them in a separate container of water — not straight into your main tank. Put them somewhere well-lit and give them a chance to perk up. This way, if any plants do deteriorate further, they won't risk polluting your fish tank in the process.
It's the same approach we take when we receive deliveries ourselves. A little patience at this stage can save a lot of problems later.
Worried About Ordering Live Plants Online for the First Time?
We get it. Buying live plants online feels like a leap of faith, especially if you've read horror stories about plants arriving dead and sellers refusing to help.
Here's our honest position: issues are rare, because we work hard to make sure they don't happen in the first place. But when something does go wrong, we deal with it. Send us a photo and an email, and we'll get back to you as quickly as we can to make it right. We're a family business — our reputation matters to us in a way it simply doesn't to a faceless online retailer.
We've been in this trade for nearly 40 years. We've seen what good looks like — and what bad looks like. Our goal is always to send you plants we'd be happy to put in our own tanks.
