Dried banana leaves are a natural botanical that suit shrimp tanks, nano aquariums, betta tanks and blackwater or biotope setups. Laid across the substrate, they look like natural leaf litter and give shrimp, fry and small fish somewhere to graze and shelter.
As the leaves slowly break down, they release humic substances and a gentle amount of tannin, which lightly tints the water. Banana leaves are softer and gentler than bark or large pods, so they are a good choice if you want a mild effect. The surface grows a fine biofilm that shrimp love to graze on throughout the day.
Banana leaves are not long-lasting. They typically break down within a few weeks, so replace them as they decompose to keep the effect going. Remove any leaves that have broken down fully, and keep an eye on water quality in new setups.
Before adding to your aquarium, rinse well. Soaking or boiling the leaves for a few minutes helps them sink and releases excess tannins. The leaves can be broken or cut down to a smaller size if needed.
As a natural product, size and appearance may vary. Adding botanicals to your aquarium can affect water parameters and release tannins into the water, so we recommend regular water testing when using botanicals.
